Zig Ziglar is often credited with saying, “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly — until you can learn to do it well.”
That line matters because it confronts the fear of beginning.
Most of us do not get meaningful things right the first time. We may understand the concept, but understanding is not mastery. We may have head memory, but we do not yet have muscle memory.
You can understand swimming from the edge of the pool.
You can understand public speaking from the back of the room.
You can understand leadership from reading the book.
But eventually, you have to get in the water, stand up, make the decision, write the draft, have the conversation, or take the swing.
That is where learning begins.
But there is another piece.
Mental rehearsal also matters.
We can think through an action before we take it. We can visualize. We can imagine the sequence. We can prepare our minds for what our bodies, voices, and decisions will later need to do.
Athletes use this. Speakers use this. Musicians use this. Leaders use this. Writers use this. People preparing for hard conversations use this.
Mental rehearsal is powerful.
But it is not a substitute for real practice.
It is a companion to practice.
The deeper truth is this:
Practice does not automatically make perfect. Practice makes permanent.
If we keep repeating the wrong thing without correction, we become more consistent at doing it wrong.
But corrected practice makes better.
Reflective practice makes wiser.
Courageous practice makes possible what fear would have postponed forever.
So the growth process has three movements:
Start before you are good.
Rehearse before and between attempts.
Correct as you practice.
That is how head memory becomes muscle memory.
That is how concept becomes conduct.
That is how intention becomes action.
And that is how we learn to do it well.
