Metamorphosis is a change in form, structure, or substance. We see it through the wonderfully natural—and still miraculous—process by which tadpoles become frogs and caterpillars become butterflies.
It is also a picture of what happens in the heart and life of a believer in Jesus Christ.
The Greek word translated “transformed” appears four times in the New Testament. Twice it describes the Transfiguration of Jesus. Twice it describes the transformation taking place in those who follow him.
Paul writes in II Corinthians 3:18:
“But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
As we behold the glory of God in Jesus Christ, the Spirit changes us. Our minds are renewed. Our priorities are reordered. Our lives begin to reflect the One upon whom we are gazing.
This transformation may begin in a moment, but it continues throughout a lifetime.
